Turn old into new

By now, almost everyone can talk about recycling. But upcycling? This beautiful word describes the process of turning used objects into something new. According to the principle: nothing is so old that it can’t be used for something else.

It should no longer be a big surprise that environmental protection is a top priority at the BILSTER BERG. The care and protection of flora and fauna has been important to BILSTER BERG since the very beginning. This includes, as for every private household, the proper collection, separation and disposal of waste. But upcycling and the reuse of materials and objects is also always an issue at the BILSTER BERG. Because not every item that is no longer needed for its original purpose has to be thrown away straight away. Many items can even be upgraded and thus given a second life. This saves resources and contributes to nature and climate protection.

The entire technical team is constantly checking whether leftover materials are suitable for upcycling or reuse before they are being disposed of. For example, plexiglass panes that were in use at a customer event were foiled with interesting facts about the BILSTER BERG and can now be found in the Ostschleifenterrasse.

After the request for standing and buffet tables in a rustic design arose, we considered the following: Buy new or possibly build them yourself? So we gave old wooden pallets a new meaning of life. For the bar tables, two wooden pallets were sawn in half and screwed together with their sides on edge. A slightly thinner stone-look board serves as the tabletop. Although quite simple in construction, the bar tables make quite an impression at events. A bar in pallet design also had to be built to match. “The difficulty in building the bar was that it naturally has to offer a certain size and storage space. In order to be able to be used on the entire site, it had to be easy to transport,” Viola Titze says, who is responsible for marketing and communication at BILSTER BERG and was helping out in the technical department during the construction of the bar.

For the rustic look, all the pallet furniture was flamed and marked with the BILSTER BERG branding.

“It’s fun to think about what else you can do with the most unusual materials and objects. Of course, we always look at what we could use at BILSTER BERG for ourselves and our customers,” says Klaus Scholtis, a member of the technical team and a qualified wood engineer. “Seeing the final result in action makes us proud of our work. Not everything always has to go straight into the bin.”

In addition to the furniture, which is now used a lot at events, they also built multiple clothes racks out of pallets and old water pipes. These serve mainly as racks for the BILSTER BERG merchandise products.

Have a look in the basement or garage and get active yourself. There are certainly unused materials or objects that you can give a new meaning of life.
